Functional Strength |
| |
Physical conditioning for softball and baseball pitchers and players requires different training methods to be functionally prepared to perform the skills needed to succeed. Due to the genetic imbalances between a thrower’s accelerators and decelerators, the unnatural stresses caused by throwing overhand downhill on a mound, overuse in underhand pitching, and the fact that baseball and softball players seldom break down in a prime mover (large muscle) group, it can easily be said that these athletes are only as strong as their weakest link. With this being said, in order for these athletes to have the best chance at reaching their genetic max and maximize their level of competitive performance (all the while giving themselves the best chance to remain injury free), they must engage in a properly designed, all encompassing functional strength and fitness program that complements their efforts to achieve and maintain the highest degree of bio-mechanical efficiency on the mound, in the circle, and on the field. |
